What happened to her kid? His daughter, Katethinks she knows Fell. We see Lucas at the beginning of the crime in his younger days and then we return to present time. Lucas is having a hard time letting things go, but keeps getting pulled into different areas. Lucas is yanked back into a case from his early days, a case he has deep regrets about. That damned Randy Whitcomb shows up again! Nearly the first half of the book involves the beginning of that investigation and the revelation that investigation is a natural ability for Davenport.
We see many of the characters as Lucas first meets th 2nd reading – Still a great adventure, this starts with the unearthing of the bodies of two pre-ad bured.
Once you get on a roll with John Sandford’s books, well, it’s like perpetual motion, physics.

We know what he’s done, and sometimes even why, long before Lucas Davenport does. I have to say the only parts that really sunk me into the book were the parts with the murderer.
Typically, we know who the bad guy is by page Xavier Cruz is the guy in charge. DeeDee McAllister is a lawyer, married to Mark who has a nice gun collection, and she’s sleeping with Lucas. Terry Scrape is crazy and he knows it.
It has some great action scenes, a very interesting climax, and in the end, it may just break your heart. Sandford remains in great form in this, the 21st in his “Prey” series. Lucas’s cops were outsiders, for the most part.
Fred Carter is still out there, working as a security guard at the Capitol. His writing and the appeal of his lead character are as fresh as ever.

More often these are times in the story where some break in the case has happened or some other critical event has left the police scrambling. As always there is a question o I am a huge Lucas Davenport fan so any book about him is going to be great and this one is no exception. He didn’t care how he closed a case unlike Sahdford who wanted the truly guilty caught.
This one takes place long after the ones I’d already read, but has and lengthy flash back that fills the readers johnn on Lucas Davenport’s rookie years, giving them a good sense of what brought him to be the detective he became.
He reckons if Weather Karkinnen is Lucas’ wife, he’d better do his best work. Byried Johnson and Delores Schmidt are crime scene techs. It was the truth.
